Concourse C Extension

The following excerpt, taken from the DJC June 1998 edition, describes in the Portland International Airport Concourse C Extension project in more detail.

Portland International Airport Concourse C is a challenging four-phase project that involves extending an existing consource and paving 27 acres of apron and taxiways in the midst of busy operations. A key project feature is a two-level, 120,000-square-foot, steel-framed structure athat adds 10 passenger gates to the airport. Substantial site work, including relocation of aviation fuel lines and utilities, is a critical part of the project. Tight coordination with airport officials is an ongoing challenge to avoid sensitive airport operations, not only for aircraft and ground crews but for the public as well. Concrete and asphalt paving, done in two shifts, required detailed planning to accomodate airplane traffic for takeoffs and landings. An on-site batching plant has been used to facilitate paving and to offset concrete delivery truck traffic at the airport.
